Otagi Nenbutsuji temple, Kyoto, Japan

京都嵯峨野地方にある「愛宕念仏寺（おたぎねんぶつじ）」

1200年以上の歴史を持ちながら、
一時は戦禍や災禍によって廃寺となりましたが、昭和初期に無事再興

現在は境内を埋め尽くす表情豊かで
苔むした1200躰を超える羅漢像が人気の山寺です

見頃を迎えた燃えるような紅葉の赤と苔の緑のコントラストが本当にきれいでした

それにしても、山奥のマニアックなお寺だと思ったのですが、
意外にも外国人観光客が多かったのでびっくり

This is called 'Otagi Nenbutsuji' temple, situated in the remote area of Sagano, Kyoto prefecture. The temple has more than 1200 years history but has been ruined by natural disasters and wars a couple of times. It was rebuit by a new Buddhist monk about 70 years ago, then over 1,200 Buddha statues( called 'Rakan') was created by volunteers as well as neighbourhood worshiped that Buddhism.

The contrast with the fall foliage and green mossy statues were so beautiful! To be surprised, I guess this is not a popular temple, but there were a lot of foreign tourists.
